Enugu State is one of the 36 states of Nigeria. Less formally, it is also known as the Wawa State, because the people in this area respond with ‘wa’ (meaning ‘no’) rather than ‘mba’ as used in other parts of Igboland. Located in the southeast of the Nigeria, Enugu spreads its borders to the states of Kogi and Benue to the north, Ebonyi to the east, Abia and Imo to the south and Anambra to the west, covering an area of around 8,730 square kilometers. Enugu town, the state capital, lies at the foot of the Udi Hills and is surrounded by attractive range of hills and situates at an altitude of 240 meters above sea level. Conformably, Enugu consists of two words: ‘Enu’ (top) and ‘Ugwu’ (hill) resulting to ‘hill top’.Enugu state is noted for her cultural diversity, beautiful sceneries and undulating plateau. In Enugu state, tourism is coal. Our investment and charm emanate from the unique dynasty of Ngwo pine forest, Ezeagu tourism complex, Iva Valley coal mine , Awhum waterfall, Opi lake complex, Milken hill, Ani Ozalla Lake, Silicon hill, among other attractions.

Enugu State is home to the Igbo speaking peoples, widely noted for industry, entrepreneurship, resourcefulness, travelling and most importantly hospitality (it is our custom to greet people very warmly first, ask about their family and health, before starting any business discussion). The Igbos have had long contact with western influences and English is spoken widely. Christianity is the major religion, mostly due to the history of early contact with the missionaries from the west in the pre-colonial period. Farming and trading constitute the key occupations in the state’s economy. Yam, cassava and palm-oil products are the main crops, but corn, rice, pumpkin, melon, beans, okra, avocado, pineapple and even cashew nuts are cultivated as well.

Enugu was "founded" in 1909, when Mr. Kikson, a British mining engineer , stumbled on large coal reserves in Udi ridge while looking for silver. Lord Lugard, the then colonial governor, took keen interest in the unexpected discovery. By 1914, the first shipment of coal was made to Port Harcourt and was widely exported to the west. The increasing mining activities attracted foreign entrepreneurs that settled and created the early cities of Iva valley, Coal camp and Asata, all in Enugu. Enugu acquired township status in 1917, and was called Enugwu-Ngwo, but because of the rapid expansions of the township into the areas owned by other indigenous communities, the city was renamed in 1928 to Enugu.

In 1939, Enugu became the capital of the eastern province of Nigeria. It also became the administrative city of the Eastern Region of Nigeria in 1951 when the country was subdivided into three regional areas. In 1967, the state served briefly as the provisional capital of the secessionist Republic of Biafra. Subsequently, It became the capital of the East central state upon the creation of the 12 states of Nigeria, and the the capital of Anambra State. Enugu earned the status of a state in 1991 and retained the city of Enugu as its capital. Wawa Community stands for love, unity, and family.
